COMMUNITY GOALS FOR INTERSECTION OF GWYNNS FALLS PARKWAY & MCCULLOH STREET
Creative Placemaking Workshop at Druid Hill Park, 10/15/11
NUMBER ONE is to get D.O.T. to address the dangerous intersection by:
1.First and foremost, putting in crosswalk signals!
2.Reducing lanes of traffic
3.Possible creation of traffic circle
4.Making it ADA compliant
5.Adding bike lane
6.Color-coding lanes
7.Adding speed cameras and red light camera with revenue possibly going towards the community’s goals.
SHORT & LONG-TERM GOALS include:
1.Clean-up
2.Planting and landscaping plots & medians
3.Painting the crosswalks and possibly the intersection
4.Adding color through recycled tree sculptures (that also function as seating), vertical markers, painted telephone and traffic poles.
5.Visually linking the neighborhood to the park by painting the streets green to extend the grass medians into one long line.
6.Silhouette sculptures of animals, plants, and/or people that move with the wind – to create more visual interest and movement (other than cars!).
7.Bring the Grand Prix bridges – owned by the City – to be used temporarily by pedestrians and to draw attention to the issue.
8.Streetlights or historic lighting
9.Big sculpture in center island
10. Address burned out building on corner (3400 Auchentoroly Terrace) – tear it down or restore it and make it into a community center with café, etc. In the meantime, create vinyl panels to cover the plywood boards in windows.
11. Eliminate overhead wires
12. Cobblestone crosswalks that also function as rumble strips
13. Information and food kiosks at entrance
14. Activate green spaces at entrance with seating areas
15. More trees, particularly shade trees
16. Banners or artistically signs all around to slow down traffic and lead the eye into the park.
17. Create colorful, curved walkway from one side of street to other
-
18. Large arch at entrance to let you know you are at a destination
-
19.Handcrafted bike racks
